Cancer Council Ride for a Reason TVC

Finalist, 2013 AADC Awards, Directing Category

Produced by Urtext Films, for Cancer Council SA

Urtext Films has had a long and rewarding collaboration with Cancer Council SA, producing a variety of web and TVC content. Our collaborations have always focused on stories by and about those affected by cancer, having subjects speak in their own words and tell their own emotional journey.

With Ride for a Reason 2013, we continued that focus on real stories, but the client wanted us to push it in a grittier, intense direction. The images are of real riders, the voices and stories are their own. It is a powerful combination.

Already Home Campaign

Part of the Adelaide City Council’s Already Home project, a film series on city living in Adelaide. The project was the recipient of the 2011 AADC’s Master Chair.

Produced by Urtext Films, for the Adelaide City Council

Already Home was a landmark digital storytelling project to encourage city living in Adelaide, Australia. The project consisted of captivating portraits of everyday city life, romantically told by Adelaide’s leading filmmakers, in addition to written stories and photographic essays. Matt and Rosie were commissioned to create two of the four films in the project.

Knowing the Postman (via Clemenger BBDO)
This film takes a look at the Hutt Street Precinct, where Urtext Films based itself during its time in Adelaide. The film in part represents our feelings towards this almost village-like part of the city.

Sounds of Life
A film that demonstrated how the sounds of the city are intricately woven into the city-living experience, told through our subject Paul, a musician/composer who lives in Rundle Street. The film had a tactical motive – preparing would-be city-dwellers to the sounds that city life brings, and how to look at them as a positive part of life in Adelaide.

A particular feature of the film is its rich and layered soundtrack, that is a careful balance of voice, atmospheric sounds, and music. We worked long and hard with sound designer Matt McKenzie-Smith to piece together many layers of sounds, that we would record on our daily journeys throughout the city.

Elders ‘There When You Need Us’ Campaign

Finalist, 2011 AADC Awards, Directing Category

Produced by Urtext Films, via Clemenger BBDO Adelaide, for Elders

This series of films, part of the ‘There when you need us’ campaign for Elders, was one of Urtext’s first major collaborations with an advertising agency. Matthew worked with Clemenger BBDO, travelling the country to capture the stories of four farmers who utilised Elders’ services.

The Elders films were one of the first commercial examples of Matthew interviewing the subject whilst operating the camera, which leads to a unique style of ‘portrait style’ interview that moves away from the typical ‘talking heads’ of mainstream documentary.

The web films were accompanied by a print campaign in rural presses that directed readers to the web films. The print campaign included photography by Paul Torcello.

Sight For All Brand TVC

Produced by Urtext Films, for Sight For All

When presented with the opportunity to make a commercial featuring Sight For All’s work in South East Asia, we wanted to move away from what one would come to expect from such content. In an increasing world of oversaturation from charitable calls to action, we wanted to have a commercial that was entirely positive – that celebrates sight in all its glory.

The resulting shoot is a series of images from Myanmar and Cambodia, where Sight For All works to end curable blindness. The sequence moves through the colour spectrum – sometimes the images are epic and grand, and sometimes they are of a small detail. All are an important element of what makes up the things we see every day.

These countries are very difficult to live in; the beauty of their world is something everyone has a right to experience. We wanted to create a commercial that made people reflect on what it means to have sight, and to give to those that don’t.
